Beyond Abortion: Reproductive Rights Resources for the Feminist Activist

Last spring I became more active in advocating for reproductive rights--and as I did, I became aware of the larger world of reproductive rights issues beyond the artificial dichotomy of "choice": yes or no. I wanted to advocate from a position as a feminist psychologist, but was chagrined to find my professional organization, the Association for Women in Psychology, did not have any position statements or other resources for activists wishing to speak from a position of a feminist concerned with mental health. When I complained, they invited me to create such a resource, and that is what I invite you to view today.

This website functions as a source of position statements, statements of support, and links to tools, resources, current research, and avenues for advocacy. It looks beyond issues of abortion to explore research and problems in contraception, fertility and infertility, menstruation and menopause, multicultural resources, and specific advocacy positions. It serves as a portal to other feminist organizations and, ideally, as a springboard to advocacy.

As a feminist, I believe reproductive rights are a vital women's issue. But I believe just as strongly that the needs of reproductive health do not end with women: This is a children's health issue, and a teen health issue, and a men's health issue. It is time that reproductive health is addressed as a human concern and not marginalized as a "women's problem." It is my dearest hope that this site will prove a useful tool toward achieving this goal.
