Leadership Education and the Revitalization of Democracy

A National Symposium hosted by Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, May 28-30 2008

‘Leadership Education and the Revitalization of Democracy’ was a groundbreaking conversation on the role of colleges and universities in developing student leadership through civic engagement. The symposium was held at and hosted by Miami University in Ohio from May 28 – May 30, 2008. It included representatives from twelve exemplary campus programs, as well as leaders in the national movement for re-energizing higher education’s commitment to its civic mission.

The symposium and its follow-up initiatives will explore, discuss, and document more rigorously the ways in which leadership education can meld more seamlessly with civic engagement programs on campuses across the country. We will examine “what it takes” to educate for civically engaged leadership among the next generation. The symposium will result in a report on “leadership education and the revitalization of democracy,” along with several follow-up regional symposiums and other initiatives.
