The Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute is committed to promoting community-based learning experiences that prepare students to become engaged public leaders and informed global citizens while also enriching and giving back to the communities that surround and support Miami University. By connecting students and communities, in Southwest Ohio and around the world, the Wilks Leadership Institute advances the understanding and practice of the types of engaged leadership necessary for building a vibrant democratic society today and in the future. The Institute was established as the result of an endowment from Miami graduate and renowned philanthropist and attorney, Harry T. Wilks.

Mikhail Gorbachev receives Leadership in a Changing World award

Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet Union, spoke at Miami in October 2005 as part of the Jack R. Anderson Distinguished Lecture Series.

Wilks Leadership Institute co-sponsors 'Homeless in the World' conference

The conference, "Homeless in the World: A Human Rights Perspective," was held at Miami University Nov. 12-13.

"Cynthia Bogard, Hofstra University, will give the plenary address on “Seasons Such as These: The Persistence of Homelessness in America” at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in the Shriver Center multipurpose room.

Coretta Scott King speaks at Miami

Coretta Scott King spoke at Miami in October 2004, in an event co-sponsored by the Wilks Leadership Institute. Her topic was: "Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere: Civil Rights and the Problems of Inclusion."

John Glenn visits Miami to inaugurate Wilks Institute

John Glenn - war veteran, US Senator and NASA astronaut - spoke at Miami as part of the inauguration of the Wilks Leadership Institute. He was also awarded the inaugural 'Leadership in a Changing World' award.

Interim coordinator of Wilks Institute appointed

Emily H. Langdon was appointed interim director in 2003.
