On Tuesday Oct.27th Wilks Scholar Liz Garret discussed her 2010-2011 student mentoring program with the Hamilton City School District Board of Education. Her intent for the program is a community-wide program that would provide a one-on-one mentoring partnership with students in Hamilton’s middle schools and at MUH. If the program is successful it will fulfill its goal of increased graduation rates and a stronger sense of civic connection in what it means to be a citizen of Hamilton.
This school year Liz will work with eighth-grade students to help design the program in ways that will be beneficial to them, and will begin the program next school year when “sustainability issues” have been worked out.

The president of the board, Glen Stitsinger said of the program, “We need mentors and I’m really happy you’ll be starting this project,” “I hope it will grow and be a program that we can have year after year.”
