Need for more Recycling Bins & Bike Racks
I would love to see recycling bins (for paper and plastic/aluminum) next to every trash can on campus. Specifically, in places like the Rec Center, on all levels of the parking garages, Shriver and other food courts, etc. Often a trash can is readily visible, but one has to search for a recycling bin. Many times I see soda bottles, cans, and newspapers tossed into the trash because there are no recycling bins within sight. Increasing the number of recycling bins on campus seems like a fairly easy way to encourage people to recycle – by providing the visual and making it effortless for them to do so.
The other suggestion I have is to increase bike racks on campus. From my corner of the university, the number of bicycle racks outside Pearson Biological Sciences Bldg. has diminished and there are very few racks outside the new Engineering Building. Currently bikes must lock up to benches, etc. Perhaps this is due to construction and there are already plans to increase racks later, but certainly providing more racks would show Miami’s support for environmentally friendly transportation, and would make things easier for bicyclists.
Miami can be an incredible leader on the green front. If we enhance our current efforts with proactive ideas, we can set the pace for other campuses as well. Thanks for your efforts!
