The Aftermath

I arrived home late Saturday evening. I thought I was happy to be home, but all I wanted to do was go back! It really hit me how the conditions in Colombia are soooo different than the ones Americans are exposed to. I know that they have been their and are "used" to those conditions, but why can't they deserve better than what is in front of them. I felt in daze all day on Sunday, i felt like I wasn't really where I was. I am so happy to have witnessed how people can be happy with nothing, but family and friends. It has made me appreciate my education and my roof over my head. Although it may sound cliche it is true :-). I decided I am going to teach myself Spanish and go back sometime. I want to experience it at its fullest and understanding the language can help me do that! Overall the trip was a success, I will never forget Colombia! Thanks!

Adios!!!

Cultural shift perhaps

Chloe,

What you describe is not a jet lag (certainly none going south!) or a travel dip of energy. I think it's a jarring of awareness - the shift you made going from such culturally different places, especially the extremely poor work sites in Colombia.

I know I look at everything differently here in the USA when I return.

Re-entry

Hi Chloe,

I felt the same way on Sunday and still now. It's so difficult to come back from a place like that. The contrast between what you see as living conditions and what you experience of people's welcoming, friendly attitudes is something we'll never forget.

Let me know if you want to get together and work on Spanish :) I have some books that might be useful to you.
