Tomorrow

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

As I said last time, we’ll be pressed for time tomorrow. Make sure to take a look again at the lecture, and in particular the last page.

Remittances

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

So there was some confusion yesterday about the two maps on remittances. They did indeed represent the amount of dollars flowing into a country by overseas migrants. But two things: first, we don’t really know from where the money came. Second, we don’t really have any finer-grained sense of the geography within countries.

This map addresses both of those WRT to the U.S. and Mexico.

Migration

Monday, November 26th, 2007

This week, we tackle migration. The background lecture is here.

Before class, please take a look through the online exhibit I link to in the presentation.

Also, please take a look at this article about Cape Verde from the New York Times. In particular, spend a few minutes looking at the interactive map that accompanies the article. What kinds of generalizations can you make about the geographic aspects of contemporary migration based on these data?

Some questions to consider:

  • According to the text “Without migration, Cape Verde would not exist.” Explain.
  • In what ways has migration contributed to the evolution of Cape Verde’s economy and culture?
  • What are the changes the article suggests Cape Verdeans must now “cope” with?

To be clear, the above is required work. Be prepared to discuss in class.
