So I pinged Taco Hoekwater (who is primarily responsible for coding on LuaTex) and he thought my second option was a good idea. He did point out, however, that it'd be good to wait awhile to work on it given that LuaTeX is still in heavy development.

Simon: it's definitely possible. I imagine there are a variety of ways to do it.

For example, if Liam finishes the Ruby libraries, you could just write some code to integrate it with LaTeX. In essence, you'd be bypassing BibTeX. You just need some code to read the citation, and insert the formatted strings int eh right places in the output.

Another possibility might be to port it to Lua, and integrate it at a lower-level with LuaTeX, such that it would work in both LaTeX and ConTeXt. I find this idea intriguing myself, though I've never really looked into it in any detail.

Very interesting. Something I've been wondering for quite some time: How would CSL integrate into a LaTeX workflow? Any thoughts how this could or should be done (if it can be done).?
