Zotero

The new Firefox extension Firefox Scholar has been released into private beta under a new name: Zotero. You can get a sense of just how cool Zotero is by looking at the main page and screenshot:

  • nice, clean UI
  • auto-integration of citation metadata from web pages
  • nested named collections (like folders, but better)
  • virtual collections based on search criteria
  • nice support of data standards (RIS, MODS, and their primary import/export format is RDF, drawing in part on this schema)
  • uses a new XML language to configure citation formatting (CSL!)
  • free software

More importantly, they’ve designed the entire thing to grow into the sort of solution I’ve been looking for since I started this blog!

In many ways, in fact, this looks like what I’ve been envisioning for OpenOffice. It probably makes it much easier to do this sort of project if you’re an independent group backed up by grant money. But in any case, the beauty of open source development is that one’s efforts can sometimes show up in nicely unexpected places, and now other projects can hopefully in turn benefit from Zotero.

A public beta will be coming soon enough.
